Haida Beliefs
The Haida believed that animals were special types of people who were more intelligent than humans. The Haida created totem poles which included animals and a high ranking person. The totem poles were very colourful and had colours such as black, blue, red and green. They also believed in reincarnation and when someone died, the soul was transported by canoe to the land of souls. The Haida believed that everything had a soul including rocks, trees and water.
Haida Gender Roles
The Haida women gathered food such as berries and other plants. They also preserved the food, wove baskets, made clothing and prepared skins. Men worked on the harder tasks such as hunting fishing and building canoes and shelter. The men also made carvings and painted them. Women and men collected shellfish and hunted for birds.
Clothing
The Haida wore clothes made out of red or yellow cedar bark. The women wore skirts and capes and the men wore long capes. the capes were large elk skin capes decorated with paint and fringes. The women also wore hats from split spruce roots which the men painted with forms of animals using red and black.
