The Northwest coast people’s canoes were made from 80 foot tall cedar trees. The trees they cut had very few branches on them. The canoes could be as big as 50 feet long and 8 feet wide. Each canoe could hold anywhere from2-50 people and 10,000 pounds of cargo (usually fish). They also had smaller boats for one family or for shorter days. The canoes were used for events, potlatches, fishing and warfare. The Haida became very skilled at navigating the areas waterways. Since the Haida relied so much on the pacific ocean, lakes, rivers, streams, etc. they needed strong canoes.
Making A Canoe
First they had to cut down a birch bark tree. Then they had to split the log in half without cracking it. Next they burned and scraped the middle of the log.. After that they filled the hole with water. Then they put hot rocks in the water to make it boil so they could carve it.
